The type of roofing that is selected for a building plays an important role in its energy performance. Two main areas are affected:

Energy efficiency - Darker roofs absorb heat (solar gain) during warmer weather and place increased demands on cooling systems. Alternative roofing systems can alter this outcome.

Storm water management - Roofs are impermeable and gather large quantities of water that are funneled into a storm drains. Implementing living roof strategies help filter and divert water from storm drains.

Roofing Alternatives

Average Industry Cost: $3-4 / sq. ft.
Even though installations may be cost-effective, these darker roofing applications help produce solar gain during warmer weather and thus, drastically increase energy consumption required for cooling.

ImageCool Roofs / TPO / PWC
Average Industry Cost: $4-5 / sq. ft.
Their initial installation is more expensive, but they reflect 85-95% of heat and thus generate significantly less solar gain and cooling demands during warmer months. They can typically produce an annual energy savings between $0.10-0.20 / sq. ft. They are a win-win for energy efficiency in new building applications or when an existing roof needs replacing and last 50-100% longer than black roofs.

Average Industry Cost: $10-20 / sq. ft.
Multiple applications and products exist. Overall, green roofs help decrease the solar gain that asphalt / coal tar / EPDM roofs create. Therefore, green roofs can help produce decreased energy consumption. In addition, they are valuable in helping to filter and retain storm water on-site. This is especially helpful in urban locations where space is limited for storm water infrastructure.
