Daylight Views / Efficient Lighting

Traditional lighting methods limit the amount of daylight and can produce the following burdens:

  • Increased energy (heat gain from windows) and lighting costs
  • Decreased worker productivity and satisfaction
  • Increased carbon emissions

The suggestions below allow for a synergy between proper daylight use and restriction. In Michigan for example, it is smart to allow sunlight to enter during winter months, but restrict it during the summer. Daylight helps illuminate a building and can reduce heating requirements. In the summer however, daylight may place large demands on cooling equipment.

Although daylight presents benefits, it also presents challenges. Daylight can generate excess heat gain, which requires more cooling.

Natural Light Harvesting
Harnessing natural light reduces energy costs. Windows, skylights, light shelves and solar tubes have short payback periods and utilize natural light.

ImageLight Shelves
Devices designed to maximize natural light are available. Often they are installed on the outside of the building and bounce natural light into the interior of a building.

ImageLighting Controls / Sensors
Various lighting controls allow buildings to decrease energy use.
  1. Occupancy sensors detect activity. If so, lights are kept on. If not, they automatically turn off.
  2. Photo sensors detect available natural light levels. Natural light = no need for lights.

Shading devices come in various forms. They can exist as an architectural element (shown in picture) or as a simple window treatment. Regardless, it is often necessary during certain hours of the day to block natural light and eliminate unnecessary solar gain. Many shading devices can be automated.
