Thermal Comfort & Air Quality

Thermal Comfort & Air Quality

Supplying workplace occupants with the proper amount of fresh air and at the desired temperature can directly impact workplace satisfaction and productivity. Older HVAC systems simply supply a constant rate of fresh air throughout the day. However, newer systems have the ability to supply fresh air levels based on room occupancy, saving energy and operating costs.

Considerations

Fresh Air Supply
Occupancy within specific areas of a building can vary greatly throughout the day. When more people are present, CO2 levels increase and more fresh air is required. For example, a conference room may sit vacant most of the day, but once a meeting takes place, changing CO2 levels will require more fresh air supply. HVAC systems with variable air rate controls and occupancy sensors help meet demands in an efficient manner.

HVAC Zoning
Multiple zones within a building allow a building to react specifically to occupancy needs. Implementing multiple zones can help save energy and operating costs.

Individual Controls
People maintain different needs regarding temperature and air flow velocity. Instead of raising or lowering the temperature within an entire zone, individual workspace controls allow for personal preference and can often help save energy costs. Raised floor systems, additional controls, or individual thermal stations (Herman Miller) can help achieve greater thermal comfort while minimizing energy costs.

Filtration
Advanced filtration devices help eliminate air contaminants and particulate matter, thus improving indoor air quality.

Building Flush Out
New construction materials can produce higher levels of contaminants and VOCs. The LEED certification system requires either testing or a building flush out utilizing fresh air to reduce the level of contaminants. Multiple methods can ensure that appropriate levels of indoor air quality exist.

Benefits

  • Improved air quality
  • Increased worker productivity
  • Increased energy-efficiency
