Water Efficient Plumbing

Water Efficient Plumbing

Plumbing fixtures in buildings consume a considerable amount of freshwater for necessary activities such as hand washing and toilet flushing. Advances in plumbing technology now allow for minimized fresh water use. For example, many dual flush toilets can achieve flush rates of 1.1 gallons or less, much less than the 1.6-gallon flush rate required by The Energy Policy Act of 1992. This 30% savings can add up quickly. In addition, it is possible to use rainwater or grey water for toilet flushing.

These technologies can help achieve greater water efficiency:

Newer faucets are designed with lower flow rates and automatic sensors, allowing for water conservation without lifting a finger.

ImageDual-Flush Toilets
New toilets have a dual-flush capability: a smaller flush for liquids and a larger flush for solids. Combined, the average flush rate is significantly less than required by EPA 1992.

ImageWaterless Urinals
New technology has allowed for eliminating the need for freshwater supply in urinals. Significant operating savings can be realized.

ImageGreywater Systems
In new construction projects it is possible to incorporate grey water systems, which use previous rain, storm water, laundry and hand washing water for toilet flushing.

Benefits

  • Decreased freshwater costs
  • Decreased sewage costs
  • Decreased burden on freshwater supply

Synergy

  • Grey water and storm water harvesting
