Paving

Paving

Paving systems play an integral role in the sustainability of a site for two main reasons:

Storm Water Runoff - non-permeable surfaces generate large volumes of runoff and require the infrastructure to contain and filter runoff.

Heat Island Effect - paving surfaces absorb sunlight and increase air temperatures. Rising temperatures not only contribute to the region's Heat Island Effect, but increase the energy used to cool a building.

Paving systems can vary based on cost, life expectancy, contribution to the Heat Island Effect, and the surface's permeability.

Type Average Cost Life Expectancy Heat Island Permeability
Asphalt $0.50-1.50 / sq. ft. 10 years High Low
Concrete $3.00 / sq. ft. 25 years Low to Medium Low
Permeable Concrete $2-6 / sq. ft. 20-40 years Low to Medium Medium
Permeable Pavers $5-10 / sq. ft. 20-50 years Low to Medium Medium
