Appliances & Equipment

Appliances and equipment use a considerable amount of energy. Computers alone can often consumer 25% of a commercial building's electricity. Replacing older equipment with Energy Star® equipment can save energy and operating costs.

Considerations

Energy Star
Energy Star rates appliances in various categories based on their energy efficiency. If you have older equipment or are looking to purchase newer equipment, Energy Star certification will help you make a solid investment. Typical paybacks are less than five years as they typically use 10-50% less energy than standard models. Common Energy Star equipment includes:
  • Computers
  • Office equipment
  • Appliances
  • Light Bulbs and Fixtures
  • Power Strips

Phantom Load
Also referred to as standby power, vampire power, vampire draw, and leaking electricity, phantom load refers to the energy consumed by electronic appliances while they are not being used. For example, laptop computer power adaptors and other electronic devices do not offer the ability to turn the power adaptor off, and thus, they constantly consume electricity. A typical desktop computer still draws 7 watts/hour when it is turned off. In an office building, copiers, computers, and other appliances unknowingly consume energy.

Benefits

  • Reduced energy consumption
  • Lower operating costs
  • Reduced carbon emissions
